Computer Aided Design

For the first part of my Project I’m planning to do different experiments of laminated wood. First I want explore the properties of Peruvian wood in order to know which one is better for the different uses.

Parallel to this research i need to laminate these different woods to see the mechanical properties of each one and also adding another material or composite.

That’s why I decided to create a laminated bow, or a laminated longboard. For this assignment I need to create different wood molds in the shoppbot machine.

For this first part I need to model the mold, i used rhino to model it, but constantly I have to change the form of the mold because each wood and each composite is different.

In the image i show that i can change de curve and inmediatly the software will generate a new mold with the new parameters. So I decided to make the model parametric with grasshopper.

I can change the curve of the bow, depending of the material. I want to experiment with 2 factors. The geometry and the properties of material.

To experiment a little bit more with the molds, I developed my own waffle definition to make another kind of molds, for bigger laminated pieces.

For example longboards or skates.

I can change the curve of the bow, depending of the material. I want to experiment with 2 factors. The geometry and the properties of material.

To finish this work I experiment with a render software the name is Keyshot, I can render without setting a lot of things, is really easy and has good results.

To make a probe of the render programs I made a chair using the wafer definition in grasshopper and I used 3dmaxstudio, keyshot and rhino.

Unfortunately 3dmax was too difficult to control, and I preffer to use keyshot because is easier.

I think 3dmax is good but I need to set a lot of parameters, in keyshot this parameters are ready to use.

This is the chair that i made as a probe in rhino, i used a part of the definition in grasshopper plus another components.

Here I was using the diferent kinds of materials in Keyshot 3

Here i make a probe of the enviroment function

Finally i decided to post a easy-animation. In this week i explored CAD software like Inventor, Solid Works and Autocad. But i m still learning the different funtions of this software, For example i need to read more about the shafts, gears, force analysis, etc. For render i use 3dmax with mental ray but now i m using keyshot because is easy and quickly, it doesnt have amazing results but aceptable and good for showing the ideas.

Finaly i was exploring the cs5 programs for example Adobe Premiere and After Efects but are too complex for the assignments that i have to do. I preffer to use too Sketchbook pro to sketch the ideas before i model because sometimes to model could limitate the creativity and also could take more time. I really feel that i m learning and learning how to learn new possibilities, maybe before i knew the existence of this software but i was using only rhino.

It is really good to explore new software and also new functions of the software that i usually use for example rhino and grasshopper.

Another example is the Artichoke lamp, files are also available
